Swing dancing today is quite similar in many ways to swing dancing in the 1930s. If anything, it is more exciting today because it incorporates the glamour and style of the 30s with the developments of modern times. There are swing dancing classes and clubs which practice the original Lindy Hop as it was done in the 30s, then there are other classes and clubs who put new twists on old swing and create variations of the original. Understanding Swing Dancing Music

The music played at the Savoy was known as swinging jazz. This form of jazz was up tempo and energetic, as were the dances being performed to it. The Lindy Hop originated at the Savoy and was named by a dance enthusiast named Shorty George Snowden after Charles Lindbergh’s trip across the Atlantic Ocean. Band leader Cab Calloway gets credit for introducing the Jitterbug, which was not just a piece of music but a dance as well.
